Re-birth of Shanker Bakshi dot Com

by Shanker Bakshi on June 8, 2008

I completely lost my blog last month, what you see now is the mirror image of my previous blog which is based on memory about how it was before ceasing. It took whole month to re-build it. But they say every accident is an opportunity to learn something. It was a heart breaking experience for me. Let me explain how it happened and why it happened so you may also avoid mistakes which I did and ruined everything.

I am not a full time blogger. I am in a job which eats 12 precious hours of my day and that too for full six days of a week. I start my journey to my job every morning at 07:00 AM and come back home in the evening at 07:00 PM. Spend one hour daily in the evening in reading blogs of my fellow bloggers. Try to write blog posts every alternate day (most tough job for a part time blogger). So because of short of time I delegated WordPress installation and up gradation job to one of my friend Abhishek, who also own a site hosting company Technoportsolutions.com

What was the blunder?

My WordPress 2.3.1 was having lots of bugs so when the software upgraded to 2.5 version, I requested my friend not to upgrade software and installed new WordPress 2.5 altogether

Our WordPress saves data in SQL format and you are always advice by everyone to keep on taking your database back up from your PhpMyAdmin control panel. So before installing WordPress 2.5 my friend suppose to take Backup of SQL Database. He did, but unfortunately the SQL backup file he downloaded from PhpMyAdmin Control Panel was corrupted and was not complete infect it was downloaded with lots of bugs in it. So when he tried to upload SQL Data back on newly installed WordPress 2.5 it was not uploading. He don’t have any other back up in hands so either he has to make good that corrupted file and upload it. We pray god to do miracle for us.

I wrote mails to my friend bloggers, raised questions in Forums and searched for help at many places but no luck. I definitely would like to mention here that one of my newly founded blog friend Michael Aulia was in touch with me all thru this tough time and suggested few measures which unfortunately didn’t work but thanks Michael for being there and doing that. You are great and I am blessed to found you. Abhinav Sonkar also showed his concern while the blog was down.

So how I get my blog back?

Well that was quite unprofessional and very un-scientific way thru which I got my blog back, so I would not reveal how I managed to rebuild it again. Instead I would like to ask you this – Do you subscribe to your own feed to any of your mail ID or in any feed reader – If not then do it now, you will always have a copy of your blog posts in your INBOX. That’s it.

What I learn from it?

The moral of the story is never delegate important task to others just try to learn things to do by your own.

The first thing I did after getting my blog back – I kick out my friend’s hosting site Technoportsolutions.com, learned how to take back up from SQL database from PhpMyAdmin control panel and how to upload it. I shifted my blog on a new hosting site Bluehost. Believe me they are superb, they extend live chat help, give you unlimited storage of data and an excellent customer ticket management system.

Happy Blogging Shanker Bakshi Dot com. Thank god you are back in my life again dear. I was missing you like anything for this whole month. Never leave me again or I would die.

It’s good to see you back online!

I think I should back-up my WordPress more often now :( We don’t want to lose our posts even for just one day, do we?

Sorry couldn’t do much help ^^

Now, I’m getting more nervous to upgrade to 2.5.1 though haven’t upgraded to 2.5. It’s depressing losing all your data, after all the hardwork. But am glad you’ve recovered everything. Now, your blog is up and running again. :-)

Hey buddy its great that you are finally online again… But I think it was a critical mistake that you didn’t have multiple backups of your database… I would suggest you this plugin, WordPress Database Backup, where you can schedule your database backups to every day or every hour (depending on your requirement) and it will mail it to any email provided. I assure you this plugin has helped me a lot and since then I have no worries about backing up my database. It’s fully automated.

Also, backup your “wp-content” folder as frequently as possible. That is also critical.

Take care! Enjoy!

Thanks Abhinav – I was aware of importance of all these back-up stuff but the bad thing that i delegate this work to my Tech Geek friend and my old hosting company owner. The lession i learned from this mistake is that always do all important work by your own. Never depend on others for sensitive works – they will never treat it as important as you think.

Welcome back Shanker. Good to ’se’ you online again.

I have upgraded to WP 2.5 months ago and I didn’t have problems with it. I also back-up my dbase every once in a while. And you’re right, it’s better to subscribe to your own feeds so you have a copy in your inbox. I will surely do that.

It’s good to know the potential for problems like this… but I don’t know if the lesson is to “not delgate important tasks”. You can still delegate, as long as you know what’s going on and the person doing the task is highly competent. In any case, welcome back to the blogosphere.

I think you are quite wrong as i have been dealing with technoportsolutions since 4years and i dont find any problem with any of my php websites or database websites.

Infact they are the only one out of many people I asked to upgrade my wordpress blog. Think Again, whose mistake it can be. Nice suggestion of subscribing to your own feeds so you have a copy in your inbox.

Shift your hosting services and see the difference yourself. I bet you will never ever turn back to technoportsolution.com after that.

How you are dealing with them- are you a re-seller of techportsolutions? do you have any corporate e-mail ID.

Lol, I shifted to one of the service provider called Godaddy and rediff pro, for two of my websites and the result was that I found myself into some deep shit. And about turning back to technoportsolutions. Nah it can’t happen, as they have real human handled support and not any robots.

I am not a reseller to that company , i am just their client.

And did i mention that they also carry the award winning hosting to their credit ? (best customer service support 2007)
