Who is Right - Mr. Chow or Mr. Rowse

Recently I sign up with Amazon Affiliate to make some more bucks. It’s been a couple of weeks since I installed Amazon Widget to see how it goes, but to grab some more information what other has their say on it, I  find two very interesting posts about Amazon Affiliate. Back in June 2007 John Chow wrote on his blog “Why I Am Not An Amazon.com Affiliate”. He gave some rational reason how useless Amazon is for a MMO (make Money Online) blog. In reply Darren Rowse Posted a post “9 Reasons Why I AM An Amazon Affiliate”. Rowse presented his side of view about Amazon Affiliation, In support of Amazon he gave 9 reasons and suggested that even a make money online niche blog can also use Amazon to earn money by writing reviews and selling Amazon products on blog.

What John Chow Says about Amazon Affiliate

  1. Amazon offer only 4% commission on sales which he think is not very high.
  2. Amazon products are also available in the store near you, he believe product should be Exclusively at Amazon, so that you can take advantage of less competition.
  3. There is no passive income with Amazon, while other network pays you life long commission on income of referrals
  4. Amazon Products are not specifically targeted to Make Money online blog.

What are Darren Rowse 9 Reason

  1. Amazon is a trusted Brand
  2. You can actually increase your commission after reaching a specific sales point.
  3. You don’t just earn a commission on the product that sell on your blog, but you earn a commission on anything that a person buys within 24 hours of you sending them to Amazon.
  4. Easily Integrated
  5. Various payment options Amazon.com gift certificate/card, direct deposit, by check.
  6. Small Payments add up to a huge Total amount. ( that not a big point that you made here Rowse)
  7. It’s an Investment that Matures Over Time.
  8. The Holidays are Boom Time ( he is happy that he is making huge money with Amazon)
  9. Wide Array of Products.

My take on above.

So tell me with whom you want to go. Well if you really asked me Darren Reasons are smart but john Chow’s reasons are more practical. Believe me it’s really difficult for a MMO blog to get money from Amazon’s Pocket.

Still how you can make money with Amazon?

Sign up with Amazon Affiliate. Write reviews about Amazon Products on your blog, smartly provide affiliate link in reviews send them to Amazon and pray that they buy some product over there. If they will buy a book of $ 25 you will get a commission of 4% on it which will be $ 1, but you if are lucky enough to sell a product of $ 2500 you will get $ 100 and that would be a great compensation for your efforts.

  1. I go for practical ;)

  2. There is a very important point which you have to consider before coming to a decision about John Chow or Darren Rowse… The readers of Problogger are much much more loyal to Darren and his blog as compared to the readers of John Chow’s blog. The intimacy between readers and Darren is very deep and they trust him. Hence when he recommends a certain product by reviewing it, people are more likely to buy it and this making a sale for him. And if you compare the traffic of both these high profile bloggers over at alexa.com, you will get the picture.

Personally, if I wanted to my make sales through affiliate conversions, I would first try to build a solid relationship of trust. In other words, my style of blogging and perception is more congruent with Darren Rowse than John Chow.

  3. I agree with you Abhinav.

Darren is more open to his reader then John,

Darren have build loyal reader base by giving them real information and tips on all aspects of blogging and social marketing, while John Chow is only interested in making money, he don’t really care what his reader expect from him.

  4. Don’t be trapped on other’s opinion, just do what you believe will benefit you. I think both of them has their own reason. So, what about you?

  5. To Chow’s point about the products on Amazon being available at your nearby store…he is right about that. See, I think people purchase on the web what they find unique or can not get readily at a store near them. Again, you really need to weigh the type of audience you are appealing to, not all audiences want to purchase those types of products. As a blogger/webmaster you must identity your target audience and get those targeted products into their hands.

  6. Nice comparison. I know about Rowse’s post and I have been actually following his suggestions more than 5 months and think that he is saying right for the long term. Obeying his suggestions, I have developed many small niche blogs and have written reviews about promising Amazon products especially on mobile phone accessories niche. Each month, I have seen more sales while my number of pages indexed in Google increased. Yes, there is a disadvantage of only 24 hours limit with Amazon but don’t forget that Amazon is quite popular and trustable and people are tend to easily buy the things even they didn’t first think. It is quite natural that while I promote an Apple iPhone case, they will go and buy another expensive products, for example even a HDTV if you are super lucky. But, it really happens while you convert your luck to strategy by building more links so SEO results. Actually you can take advantage of stumbleupon to make sales with Amazon as I did before. You will read a real example there. I admit that Amazon is not the correct place for MMO blogs though, so I don’t use it for my MMO blog.

  7. Thats exactly what i was waiting for - an answer from someone who is using it in practice. Thanks for sharing your experience with Amazon.

  8. I have already mentioned it within the post.

  9. As an outsider (I blog about pop culture, not about making money online) my vote would have to go with John Chow. First and foremost… he’s the king. Secondly, his reasons make practical sense, regardless of the interesting take from Darren Rowse. If Holidays are a good time… then run a couple Amazon ads during the holidays, otherwise save the effort and the space the rest of the year. Chow makes the best point– their products have nothing to do with your product.

  10. It depends on what products you want to make money with , I have three sites with Amazon links and they are doing fine. The products are related to books and CDs , however the site is not related to books or CDs. The commission structure is not great and they have lost out on the lead they had for affiliate marketing …..

  15. Ive had amazon up for a while, I’ts okay, but I prefer eBay. Amazon has 4% , however ,you can raise that if you get enough buys! Its all how you market it. You can make money with anything that is marketed correctly, and delivers the product. Most everyone who is buying products online has an Amazon account already, so that is deffinetly one plus.
