How To Make e-Book Cover in PhotoShop 7.0

by Shanker Bakshi on October 3, 2008

One thing which I want to clear first is that I’m not a hot spot graphic designer, but yes I know the basic and have that little creativity in me to draw things beautifully. I was keen to create e-book cover featuring me on face of it, I Googled the keyword “how to create an ebook cover in PhotoShop” and found that there are not enough article which can really help one to make an e-book with PhotoShop 7.0. Instantly I decided that I will try to learn it, will write a post about it and try to squeeze some Google juice out of it.

Let’s see how to create an e-book Cover on PhotoShop

We will do it in three easy steps;

  1. Draw a 3 D e-book Cover
  2. Draw Main face Cover and Side Spine Cover
  3. Fix Face Cover and Side spine into e-book layout.

First of all you will need a 3 D e-book layout with shadow effects like the one in the picture below.

Rather explaining how to create it lets share a PSD file with you to download

Download e-book cover PSD here

Now we need to draw 1. Face Cover and 2. Side Spine Cover

Am giving you here PSD for Face cover and Side Spine Cover

Download Blank Face Cover

Download Side Spine Cover

- Create a fancy title; make some cool tag line on a simple gradient background

- Make out Side Spine here are few steps.

Now the only thing left is to fix the main cover and Side Spine cover to the e-book cover layout.

Let see how to do it.

  • Select The Face Cover Image
  • Press The Control Button and ‘T’ at the same time
  • Right Click on the image and select ‘Skew’

Drag each corner as explain above until it fits in the corner of e-Book Cover Layout.

That’s it don’t expect much from a Make money online blogger.

That is great! I always wondered how they make covers for ebook.. This would be really helpful if I ever decide to make one.. By the way, can GIMP (open source photoshop-like software) be also used to do this?

The above method will work only with photoshop, i don’t think any other GIMP will do.

Shanker, are you into graphics designing now? I guess you can’t get away from creating your own graphics when you have your own site. I’ve tried many times but I’m always not satisfied with the result.

Hey Abhinav Sonkar – in reply to your question, you can actually do it in Gimp, but it does take a little more effort. Open Source software rocks!

Check out these ebook cover photoshop actions for an alternative (& easier) way to create eCovers!

P.S Thanks Shanker for another awesome tutorial!

I still have a copy of Ps7, but the current version is CS4. Perhaps a note stating the technique is compatible with current versions of Photoshop might help somehow.

GIMP EBook Cover January 28, 2009 at 6:40 pm

You can do something similar in GIMP. There are some examples at http://www.makeebookcovers.com. Essentially you create the different images (top, spine, front), and map them to a box.

Anyone interested in this should check out this set of PHOTOSHOP ACTIONS. Basically you can just design your covers in Photoshop, then run an action to turn your art into a CD or BOOK etc etc.

Thanks for the great tutorial. I have been wanting to do this for a long time and thank you for the templates. Great value. however I realized that they are for photoshop 7 I believe. too bad they are not compatible for CS5. but I would love to know how you made the 3D book template. I am sure it was hard in 7 but could it be that it was made easier in CS5 by any chance? If I figure it out before you I will definitely share it.

Wanted to do the tutorial and when I went to download the 3 images for the book, came to a dead end, with no templates to be had.
Can you tell me where I might obtain the templates.
Thank you
