Following Rahul Gandhi and Shashi Tharoor on Twitter

Ha has served as the UN Under-Secretary General to Kofi Annan. He was the official candidate of India for the office of United Nations Secretary-General and came second out of seven official candidates in the race.He is an author, journalist, human-rights advocate, humanitarian and adviser and fellow of various institutions. He is now a member of Indian Parliament and you can now follow him on Twitter

He is the one among those couple of MPs who knows what twitter is among 543 newly elected members of Parliament. I’m talking about Shashi Tharoor, MP from the Trivandrum constituency in Kerala. Fifteenth Lok Shabha (Indian Parliament) is not the youngest so far, it has only 36 members between ages of 30-40 but look at this figure; 68 members are between ages of 70-80.

Internet Social media sites played a vital role in Barak Obama’s victory; there is no doubt about it. Inspired by that Indian politician spend a big amount of their election campaign on Internet advertising, you remember that Advani for PM ad flashing all over internet space in India.  I have seen some contestants writing blogs before election to grab Indian youth attention; don’t know whether they would carry their blogging thing after winning elections.

Rahul Gandhi Also uses Twitter and was updating it while he was working hard campaigning for victories Indian National Congress.

Internet and India both are definitely changing. What say?

Back to the Basics

Whenever someone come across to my blogging thing or whenever I tell someone that I am a blogger and write a make money online blog, then surprisingly a question mark immediately appears on their faces, hands goes up and a little shout “what the hell blogging is, I still don’t know what you are doing man”.  Ha Ha, Blogging is still not very popular on India. The next important question they ask to me is “are you making money out of it?’. Actually in India we believe in doing everything for money, and if it isn’t for money we Indian consider it as waste of time.

So I’m trying to explain here what blogging is and how we make money from our blogs. It’s a efforts to introduce blogging and making money from blogging to a newbie and a journey back to the basic for those who are already blogging and making money out it.

What is a blog?

A blog is a type of website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries called blog posts consist of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order.

It means:

  • A blog is a specific website
  • These are organize by writing articles called blog posts
  • Blogs usually maintained by Individual persons
  • Posts are displayed in reverse chronological order i.e. most recent post at the top.
  • Each blog posts can become a discussion to comments left by its readers

From year 2003 more then 113 millions blogs have been created worldwide. The big deal about blogs is that each individual works as a news media source, express his or her opinion which is read by a high number of a small community.  Its now has become a powerful tool to convey your voice and reach a large audience. Most blog readers are other bloggers of similar interest who reads, comments and links each others blogs. A celebratory blogger can now interact with his/her fans through a blog.

A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability for readers to leave comments in an interactive format is an important feature of blogs.

How to start a blog?

[1] You can start your own blog for free as there are so many websites which provides you space to create and maintain your very own blog. There is not much of technical or web designing skill required for creating and maintaining a free blog with these sites.  Two most popular website which offer free blogging space are:

Blogger.com

WordPress.com

[2] If you decide to blog but don’t want to use free blog services like blogger.com or WordPress.com then you can setup your blog on a remote host by buying web space form any hosting company, install a blogging software available at WordPress.org, Joomla, Drupal, etc  and start blogging. No doubt you need some technical skill to install and setup blogs on a self hosted space. The basic difference between a self hosted blog and a free blogs are:

  • If you chosen a free service then your blog URL would be something like www.yourblog.wordpress.com or www.yourblog.blogspot.com whereas in self hosted blog you can buy any domain of your choice. Like this blog is setup on a self hosted space using WordPress blogging software.
  • In a free blogging site you probably not have much control over designing and look of your blog and would have to choose your design from free generic theme or templates available by free blogging service. While in a self hosted blog you can adopt various themes and design to give unique look to your blog.
  • If you are blogging to make it a business then free blogging sites will not help you a lot as you would not have much control over selling ad space and monetizing your blog.

How to make money from blogging?

Now the second question how bloggers make money from blogging. But First I want to make it clear that there are various ways you can make money from “internet” but I’m giving you only means to make money from blogging.

[2] Google AdSense

This is the most popular and easy way to make money from blogging. You just need to register with google AdSense program, submit your blog to google for approval and then if they approve your blog for AdSense program then you need to paste Google AdSense codes at space where you want to show Google AdSense ads. Google AdSense display targeted Google ads on your website’s content pages and earn from valid clicks or impressions. AdSense gives you access to Google’s vast network of advertisers, so you can show ads that are suited to your audience’s interests. But do remember before submitting your blog to google for their AdSense Program you must fill in your blog with 20 to 25 articles or blog post on your subjects.

After that you need to optimize your blog for google search engine, gain high page rank and increase visitors from organic search.

Sign Up for google AdSense

[2] Selling Private ads on your blog

Selling ads on your blog is not easy, for this your blog must receive high traffic, high readership. You can sell ads on your blog in various formats. Selling ads on a blog which is on a free blogging platform like blogger.com or WordPress.com is hard. Whereas a blog on self hosted space can place and market private ads more easily.

Read this post for further help.

[3] Paid Review

If your blog has a high page rank then you can submit it to various sites which offer paid reviews. To rank high in google index various products and service sites needs bloggers to write reviews about their products or services and pay high amount in return. This is a great way to earn a little extra money from blogging.

I’m giving you some sites where you can register your blog for writing paid reviews.

[4] Selling Affiliate Products or services

You can sign up with various affiliate networks, a small list of recommended affiliate network given below, can opt to market an affiliate products related to your blog niche and promote it by writing reviews, if someone click on those affiliate link and purchase the product or services then you get paid a handsome commission by affiliate ad network. Again the condition is that your blog must have at least 1000 or more unique visitor per day then only affiliate marketing through blogging can be effective otherwise people choose to use e-mailing system to earn through affiliate marketing.

Hope this article will help newbie to understand what blogging is and how bloggers make money from it. If you still need any clarification or have opinion about any thing explained above and you are more then welcome to comment below.

How to Optimize Your Blog for Readers?

The other day one of my friend who was installing a new WordPress blog asked me whether he should activate the setting “Users must be registered and logged in to comment” as given under WordPress Discussion setting options. I immediately advise him not to do so; one must facilitate and give ease to his/her blog readers to convey opinion through comments. I don’t think compulsion of registration before allowing them to comment on your blog serve any purpose, rather I advise him to install couple of plugin which gives ease to blog readers while commenting on posts and also optimize blogs for blog readers.

[1] The Threaded Comments Plugin

This plugin design a threaded style commenting structure for the comments that are made on your blog posts. In other words, this plugin allows you to not only reply to a post on your blog, but also to reply to a reply to a post… and on and on, creating what’s called a threaded, or nested comment collection.

Download WordPress Threaded Comments Plugin

[2] The CommentLuv Plugin

This Plugin help give something back to every single commentator as well as entice them to come back and visit more often by automatically adding a titled link to their last blog post at the end of their comment. It’s done fantastically well with tens of thousands of comments every day receiving a little love.

Download WordPress CommentLuv Plugin

You can see both of these plugin in action on this blog. The best thing is that if you are in top commentators list you can get a DoFollow link to your blog and get some additional traffic.

5 Most Common Mistakes People Makes and Get Banned from Google AdSense

May 17, 2009 by Shanker Bakshi

mistake

In the morning I was reading this very interesting story by Melvin, he explains how Big Daddy Google banned him for violating Terms of Service of using their most popular advertising program Google AdSense.  I know him very well, He is a great guy but some how he did it unintentionally, well he is not the only person who breaches the AdSense Terms of Service, we always overlooked reading terms and conditions in a hurry for signing up to the best money making tool available for bloggers.

Let me produce here few common mistakes which bloggers generally do and get banned by Daddy Google. One should avoid these mistakes in order to protect AdSense account from getting banned by Google.

[1] Never try to click your own AdSense ads

This is actually what Melvin did and got banned. He was clicking his own Ads. Clicking your own ad inventory is a sin (and I mean it). If you are doing this then you are inviting Google to throw you out of their AdSense Program. Also do not ask your office partners, associates or friends to click on them. Don’t even think of offering incentives for clicks, using automated clicking tools, or other deceptive software. Google is very smart to detect fraudulent clicks

[2] Don’t change the AdSense code

This is the second most common mistake people do. There are enough means of AdSense optimization and customizations available to change the color, background or border to suit your website needs. Do whatever you want to do leaving aside the code, never fiddle within the ad or the search code. They know it when you do it.

[3] AdSense ads should open on the same page

Don’t change the AdSense code in order to get the targeted link or advertisement to open in a new window. It’s a condition that the target ad should be open on the same page.

[4] Do not open separate AdSense Account for each website

One AdSense account can serve multiple websites .You do not need to create separate accounts for each websites you own. One account will do. If you think that you will make use of another account if one account is closed down for violation of TOS then I want to tell you that you are wrong, they will find out all the other accounts you own and ultimately will close down all the accounts. They are smarter then you think.

[5] Do not cloak or mask ad elements

You may alter colors and border to blend or contrast ads as per your site requirements. But if you modify or edit the AdSense code where the URL of targeted link is of the same color as the background then you are inviting trebles, here you are hiding important and relevant components of the ads. Also you cannot hide the phrase “ads by Google”. Do not block the visibility of ads by overlapping images, pop ups, tables etc.

Hope you understand and respect what Google wants from you. You may always inquire for help from Google AdSense Support Staff.

These are the five common mistakes which I think can leads to permanent closure of your Account with Google AdSense. If you know more share it in the comment section below. Avoid them and make money.

Networking Tips To Make You A Better Blogger

May 15, 2009 by Guest Blogger

social-networking

No matter how much of an expert you are in a niche, you can never succeed alone as a blogger. All of the big names in the blogging community certainly did not succeed without friends. Here are a few networking tips to make you a better blogger.

You Are Not Better Than Anyone Else

If you are arrogant, and you know it, please drop the ego for once. If you always believe that you know everything, and that you are better than everyone, not many people would like to associate with you.

Maybe your blog can make a million dollars on your own, but can also collapse the next day. Don’t be afraid to seek help from your fellow bloggers. Let go of your pride for one day, and simply ask, “Hey, I’m doing something wrong here and don’t know what it is, could you help?” or “Hey, I know I can trust your opinion and advice on this issue…” By asking questions, you are showing people that you don’t know everything, and can be a bit flattering to the person you are asking for help.

E-mail

Bloggers these days are so in love with Web 2.0, such as Twitter and Digg, that some of these people tend to forget the good old method of e-mailing. You should get in touch with some of your readers through e-mail. A simple e-mail could be like this:

“Hey (name), I haven’t heard from you in awhile. I miss seeing your comments. I checked out your blog recently, and I enjoyed reading (name of that blog post). I recommended some of my friends to check it out. Let me know how things are going for you. Please keep in touch!”

That e-mail is short, yet effective. It is personal, and lets the person know you care. People know that you are busy, but if you take the time to e-mail them, you can be sure that they will remember you.

Visit Blogs

Some of you might only visit blogs that are only related to your niche. We can relate back to the e-mail message example above that you should check out blogs of people who are always commenting on your blog. Doesn’t matter if your blog talks about how to make money online, and the person you are visiting talks about flying pigs.

Take the time to read up on that person’s posts, especially if the person has a Popular Post section on the sidebar.  The posts that are popular might be interesting to you. Be sure to write a great comment. While “content is king” holds true to articles that you write, “content is king” still holds true when you write wonderful comments that are valuable to readers and the author. This is another great way to be remembered.

Apologizing

Sometimes, you can upset people or end up in a never ending argument. Not everyone might agree to what you say in your blog, and some people might be right when they say you are wrong. If someone says that you are wrong, carefully go do a bit more research to look for ways to backup what you have said. Do not give an attitude of “What I say is right because I say so.”

Regardless of being right or wrong, you can e-mail the person to say something like this:

“Hi (name), I just want to personally apologize to you. My tone was a bit condescending and unfriendly. I corrected the post, and I also gave you credit with a backlink to your blog. Please keep in touch.”

You are not perfect. Everyone makes mistakes every now and then. Learn to accept what others have to say. A lot of people read, but they don’t pay attention to what they read. There are a lot of times when I wanted to quit blogging, and I’m sure a lot of bloggers have gone through that phase. What keeps me motivated to blog is that people I network with support and cheer me up all the way. Make friends, and keep in touch with them. You cannot succeed alone.
