Shanker Bakshi dot Com turns a two years old mature guy today (Cheers!). It was an interesting, learning and very exciting journey. So far so good and I have enjoyed every bit of it thoroughly. Off course during this period I made “Some” money (IF not BIG MONEY), learned so many new lessons about blogging, blog traffic, making money, how to establish a blog brand and many other techniques. Life is a journey in which you always keep on learning new things and experimenting with new ideas. There is still couple of things which I need to fix. This Blog’s PR is one of them.
I take this opportunity to thanks those that helped me to blog better. “Mostly Blog”ger don’t feel like sharing the source of their information and knowledge, bad thing, I think you must give credits to all those who lend a helping hand.
This is not the complete list but I would like to mention people who really help me out to get closer to my dreams.
John chow: We share talks over IM, he always be there to help me and guide me whenever I dice a question before him. Much has been said about him on this blog. He is my mentor and will be a guru for eternity. Thank you John for what you did to make me who I am.
Abhinav Sonkar: Tell me one thing; do you like the design of this blog? Abhinav is the guy who made this blog look super cool, Isn’t it? I pointed him to one blog and ask him “hey abhi, can you make my blog look like that”. In an hour or so he came back to me with some codes and tweaks and made this blog look better than I could imagine. This passionate guitarist taught me how to install WordPress locally, How to integrate google Custom search in a blog theme and many other valuable implications. Thanks very much Abhinav for sharing your tech “GeekNess” on my blog. You are an amazing guy.
Yan Susanto: He is really a great guy, recommends that “Thau Shall Blog”, educate me on how to use social media sites to generate traffic, how to get backlinks and so many other important things about blogging. Recently we were discussing how to choose right keywords to target organic search engine traffic.
Marlene: The girl who inspired me to switch over my blog from shankerbakshi.blogspot.com to self hosted WordPress back in November 2007. Thanks Marlene for giving me the sheer beauty and wonderful blogging tool WordPress. Your command on blog designs is incredible. Thanks for being there all the time.
I should also mention here that Ajith Prasad of Dollar Shower has made a SEO study on this blog recently and suggested some fixes which also means that I need to make some changes in the blog theme very soon.
The above list is not complete; there are so many other people who help me in one or the other way during my blogging voyage in last couple of years.
Here are some big accomplishments during last year in images:

It was a big mistake by Microsoft, They photoshopped a black man out of a picture for their Polish website and replaced it with a white guy. (See Picture No. 3 and then No. 4 in the following gallery to understand what I am saying). Later on Microsoft apologize for being racial.
Now it has become a meme from TechCrunch, if you are a Photoshop guy you can chopped any head or all three heads in the image post it on your blog, Tell techCrucnh about it and you can win a BING t-shirt. Cool

So Many People With So Little to Say

I found this demotivating yet very interesting quote about blogging at despair.com. It’s a place where you can find so many other demotivating facts about life.
Do you think it’s true? Every person and their dogs have now started blogging. It’s very rare when I found some really fresh new content in blogsphere. Every other person is mentoring as how to blog. I don’t know about you but I don’t see any harm in this situation. I love to see so many people with so little to say, I mean it. Well everyone has a mouth to shout at loud.
What is your take on this?
What Is Affiliate Marketing And How People Make Money From it?

Most of you familiar with two most famous ways of making money online:
- Making money with Blogging
- Making Money with affiliate marketing
Making money with blogging is not easy; it needs lot of hard work, horde of traffic and blog branding. I guess you are already familiar with the most common ways of making money with blogging that’s writing reviews, selling private ads, consulting and flipping blogs. Today we will discuss only about the other prominent form of making money online and that’s affiliate Marketing.
Make Money with Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing has grown enormously in recent times, according to an estimate in year 2006 affiliate marketer earned whooping US$6.5 billion.
Affiliate marketing is a form of making money where one is rewarded with commission by a business merchant for promoting their products, services or sites. The one who promote products or services called affiliate marketer. It’s a kind of revenue sharing between an affiliate marketer and an online merchant. Like you can see I am promoting some products on this blog with my affiliate link, if someone click those affiliate links, landed to affiliate product site and buy that product then in return I get paid. The publishers will place advertisements in various forms like banner, text link ads on his websites to sell the merchant’s products or to send potential customers to the merchant’s website, all in exchange for a share of the profits.
There are three Price models in Affiliate Marketing:
Basically affiliate commission is based as percentage of sales amount. Eighty percent of affiliate programs work on this basis. Nineteen percent use cost per action, and the remaining programs use other methods such as cost per click. Here are the different price Models used by merchants for payment to affiliates.
- Pay Per Sale (PPS) Affiliates get paid every time a sale is made an amount as a percentage on sale, or commission, is deposited into the affiliate’s account.
- Pay Per Action (PPA) also known as Cost Per Action (CPA) is where the advertiser pays to affiliate for each pre-specified action. It can be a purchase, a form submission, email submission or any other action desired by the advertisement.
- Pay Per Click (PPC): Advertisers pay their affiliates when their ad is clicked. With search engines, affiliates typically bid on keyword phrases relevant to their target market. Cost Per Click (CPC) is the amount of money an advertiser pays search engines and other Internet publishers for a single click on advertisement that brings one visitor to its website.
Now try to illustrate affiliate marketing with the help of an image:
In the above picture you can see a customer land on a webpage of an affiliate, affiliate then try to send visitor to the merchant’s website through various affiliate links, product reviews or banners related to merchant’s products, if visitor follow any of those links and buy product/services affiliate gets commission as compensation.
E-mail Marketing
In fact you do not always need a website or blog to promote affiliate products. Most of the super affiliates use e-mail as marketing tool for sending bulk mails for promoting affiliate products. Aweber, MailChimp and Prosender are some of e-mail Email Marketing Campaign sites.
Affiliate Networks
Now the big question is where you can find affiliate products to promote through your website, blog or e-mail marketing. Well for this you need to register yourself with some affiliate network, an affiliate network acts as an intermediary between affiliates and merchant affiliate programs. It allows website publishers to more easily find and participate in affiliate programs which are suitable for their website.
I recommend following affiliate network where you can find hundred and thousands of products to promote on your website, blog or through e-Mail marketing.
So I guess you understand what affiliate marketing is and how people try to make huge money by promoting affiliate products. If you have any question or doubt you can ask it in comment below.
In Conversation With Daniel Scocco And Amit Agarwal

Great Mind Thinks Alike, this is absolutely true.
I coined few questions before two heavy weight bloggers Daniel Scocco of DailyBlogTips.com and our very own Amit Agarwal of labnol.org. Expectedly on most of the issues both gave almost similar answers. Worth mentioning that while answering these questions both of these guys were unaware what other has quoted. Daniel love to explain things while Amit is a man of few words, spoke very clearly and to the point.
Well these guys need no introduction but for a newbie who want to know more about them:
Daniel Scocco started developing blogs and websites in 2005, on his blog Daily Blog Tips he shares what he learned along the way. The blog was nominated under the “Best Web Development Blog” category in the 2007 Weblog Awards, and currently it is ranked among the 500 most popular blogs in the world and among the 100 most popular marketing blogs in the world. He is also the founder of the online marketing and business training program Online Profits.
Amit Agarwal launched his blog Digital Inspiration in 2004 and is now the 40th most-favorite blog on the Internet. Amit has appeared on TV and radio channels including BBC, CNN IBN, CNBC, NDTV, Star TV, ETV and Blog TV Singapore. He has been featured on the cover page of The Week magazine; Digital Inspiration won the Best Technology Blog award at Indibloggies 2006 and is also included in the prestigious “Blogs of Note” list compiled by the Blogger team at Google. The site also recommended as “must read” by “India Today” and is one of the top 20 blogs at Microsoft BlogStars.
Question: They say Video blogging is the next big thing? What you think about it?
Daniel Scocco: Video is huge. In fact it is not the next but the current big thing. If I am not wrong YouTube confirmed a while ago that it is streaming over 1 billion videos every day. As for video blogging, it depends how you define it. If you are talking about someone getting in front of a web cam and talking about general stuff, well I am not sure how many people will have success with that (some certainly will, but it requires talent). Independent video creations that try to explore different concepts have a bright future though.
Amit Agarwal: video blogging will get popular no doubt with the emergence of services like qik that bring live streaming to phones.
Question: Do you see any threat from “Video” blogging to the traditional/conventional “Text” blogging?
Daniel Scocco: I don’t think that video blogging threatens traditional blogging. Both media have their place. It is like when television came along. It certainly didn’t kill books and newspapers.
Amit Agarwal: They complement to each other, neither is a threat.
Question: Bunch of boys trying to make money from blogging and fails miserably, why people see blogging as a mean to make money rather than a platform to express their onion and thoughts?
Daniel Scocco: Money makes the world go around, so people will chase it wherever they can. I am not sure if the majority of the people who start blogging do so because of the money though. As for the people who want to make money blogging and fail, well, I believe it comes from the fact that they are not willing to put what it takes. Making money with a blog is no different than making money with another type of website or with an offline venture. As such, it requires a lot of time and hard work.
Amit Agarwal: Money from blogs is a long term effort and you only realize this when you get into the thing, I mean you read success stories that Mr. x is making y from blogging and you tend to thing that I too can do it, But it’s a long term effort and lot of people quit before they reach that stage.
Question: Affiliate Marketing and Blogging is a lethal combination if you know how to go about it, do you think blogging was designed for this purpose?
Daniel Scocco: I don’t think blogging was designed for affiliate marketing. In fact I am not even sure that we can say that blogging was “designed.” I see it rather as a phenomenon that emerged spontaneously on the web, and that was shaped by a myriad of factors.
Amit Agarwal: I have no clue about affiliate marketing so no comments; I never sold any affiliate product on your blog.
Question: There is flood of Blogging coaching programs in the internet market now, everyone claims to give inside secrets of how to become a super blogger and a rich affiliate marketer. What do you think on this situation?
Daniel Scocco: Honestly I haven’t checked most of those programs, so I couldn’t say if they are good or bad. The only program which I have seen the material is Yaro Starak’s Blog Mastermind, and I confirm it is quality stuff. Yaro himself generated over $500,000 last year if I am not wrong, so he knows what he is talking about.
Amit Agarwal: I am not sure if they offer value, there are tons of great blogs / resources on the web that talk about blogging and communities in depth, follow them, read their archives, and that’s it.
Question: People consider you as one of the Guru of Professional Blogging, your take on that and also. Tell me who your favorites are?
Daniel Scocco: I don’t consider myself a guru. I just have a passion for business and online marketing, and I am glad that people like the stuff I share on my blogs. Some of my favorite bloggers are: Darren Rowse from Problogger.net, Neil Patel from QuickSprout.com, Leo Babauta from ZenHabits.net
Amit Agarwal: It’s a level playing field, you write good and unique content and they’ll find you. There’s no “god” in blogging, my favorite is Om Malik from GigaOM, very successful yet so down to earth.
Question: Your one single piece of advice to budding bloggers.
Daniel Scocco: If you are blogging as a hobby, have fun. If you are blogging to make money, treat it like a business and work hard.
Amit Agarwal: Work hard.

Are you dreaming to make hell lot of money from the very first day of your blogging? Do you wish that you will start your blog on Sunday and by the weekend your PayPal account will be flooded with American dollars? Are you inspired by those “Become Rich Overnight” stories and wish to buy your first Mercedes Benz within the first fortnight of starting of your blog.
Well truly speaking you can dream of anything you wish but the hard reality is that it’s next to impossible to make all these dreams turn in reality possible as fast (I wish all good luck to you though). People spend years of hard work to earn their first penny from their online business.
Why most of the people fail at online business?
They dream of making quick money. They think it’s easy to start it all and make hand full of money without giving much pain to their butt, but the hard reality is that you have to work hard to establish your web presence first, you need to make yourself up and above of hundred and thousands of other newbie who will follow you and your recommendation.
- I know it took me several months to sell my first affiliate product.
- I remember it took me a year to sell my first private ad on this blog.
- I remember it took me almost one year and nearly 400 articles base when someone included my review in testimonial with industries “A” Lister bloggers and internet marketers.
Nothing comes in life easy
You need to build a strong and deep foundation, like
It just like when you see a beautiful building you must realize the huge amount of hard work that has been gone into structuring its sturdy foundation.
-Extracted from my guest post at John Chow
Break-Even Point
You must have learned about this if you are a commerce graduate, break-even point is where total costs is equals to total sales revenue and the company neither makes a profit nor suffers a loss.
Some time it took a business owner several hard and tough months to reach to a breakeven point level, after that you can expect your profits. The same goes with blogging and online business. You need to put in extra efforts, your time and lot of energy to get yourself up to a level where you can demand money.
So in a nutshell I advise any newbie in the business or to someone who wish a start an online business
- It’s very hard believe me ( forget about those overnight rich stories)
- Do not expect any money in first few months
- Vigorously work without making any money for several months or years for that matter.
- Keep trying, there are no shortcuts to success.
- I guarantee, you if you do not rest and keep on doing hard work one day you will get there
To your blogging success

With the Introduction of Microsoft’s “Bing”, increasing popularity of Twitter, rising and shining of “Facebook” forced google to tweak its giant search engine to make it more compatible and killing to any sort of threat and competition from arch rivals.
Google is coming out with the next generation of its Search engine. The project is called “google Caffeine”. It will change the way how google rank sites and how your pages appear in Search results. Right now google is collecting your feedback on new avatar of Google Search engine.
Here’s how to give feedback:
Do a search at http://www2.sandbox.google.com/ and look on the search results page for a link at the bottom of the page that says “Dissatisfied? Help us improve.” Click on that link, type your feedback in the text box and then include the wordcaffeine somewhere in the text box.
For the last several months, a large team of Googlers has been working on a secret project: next-generation architecture for Google’s web search. It’s the first step in a process that will let us push the envelope on size, indexing speed, accuracy, comprehensiveness and other dimensions. The new infrastructure sits “under the hood” of Google’s search engine, which means that most users won’t notice a difference in search results. But web developers and power searchers might notice a few differences, so we’re opening up a web developer preview to collect feedback.
How it will affect your blog:
Do a search with the specific keyword for which you appears on page #1 in google search at http://www2.sandbox.google.com/ and see if you still at #1 page. Definitely it will affect your blog ranking and SERP for some of your posts. I wish you will be manage to please the “New Google” too as earlier.

Sometime ago there was a lot of buzz about the Twitter 1 million followers’ war between CNN and Ashton Kutcher. This strange and unique fight between mainstream Media (CNN) and Hollywood Star Ashton Kutcher fueled when Ashton made a video statement that he wanted to beat CNN to one million followers. Interestingly he promised in that video that if he wins he will “ding dong ditch” billionaire Ted Turner’s (founder of CNN) House. Finally Ashton won this race of 1 million twitter followers and “ding dong Ditch” too at Ted’s house.
Coming to India, now the most beautiful, stunning and talented actress Priyanka Chopra join twitter and tweeting actively from a while. Priyanka has great fan following in India. I know she can make it to 1 Million Twitter Followers soon and can become the first Indian or should I say first Bollywood celebrity to achieve this status. She connected to twitter on June 18th. She is now followed by more than 25000 users (at the time of writing of this post) and I hope very soon she will accomplish the Twitter 1 Million Followers Mark as she is very popular among Indian youth.
Surprisingly biggest star of Indian Film Fraternity Mr. Amitabh Bachchan is still missing the Twitter Magic, when someone from print media asked him:
Mr. Bachchan Have you succumbed to using twitter yet?
Mr. Bachchan relied “What on earth is that?”
Oh that’s really strange he has not heard of twitter yet, I am saying this because he is very active at blogging and continuously updating his blog from last one year without fail. His blog is visited by more than 5 million people every month. I guess soon he will also start tweeting.
Why more and more celebs are getting additive to Twitter
Well if you look at the statistics 7 out of top 10 spot of the most popular Twitter users occupied by Hollywood celebs. Can you suggest and throw a little light on why these celebs are now becoming devotee to twitter?
